what is this thing?

Any idea what this is?
Jack found it at "Value World" for ten cents and fell in love with it.

I am thinking a baseball helmet of some kind, but with no idea why I think so...

    It could be a catchers mask or now batters are required to wear face masks too.

    Thanks, Teacher. I had no idea batters were required to wear a helmet these days...and yet, now that you mention it, I may have seen photos of kids playing baseball and thr batter wearing one. Maybe even one like this... hmmm.
