It's funny you should mention that because whenever people try to tell me that school prepares children for 'the real world' I tell them school has more in common with prison than it does 'the real world'. Never thought of the lockdown thing, though...that'll be good to add, lol. :)
I know this isn't the thing you were looking for, but... If you'd ever like a tour of my kids' fabulous school (which does indeed do lockdown drills), I'd be happy to show you around there. It's free, it's public, it's a charter school, and I'm happy that my children go there.
I am not dissing homeschooling -- it is a neat thing. Just thinking out loud that my kids' school really isn't as evil and nasty as schools are being characterized to be.
Hi, Valerie, I wasn't specifically looking for anything, just struck by a thought. The school my friend's daughter goes to was closed down for 6 hours -- no peeing, no lunch -- by a rumour. I was struck then by the parallel. Not all schools are horrible, and homeschooling isn't for everyone. But I had a horrible experience and my older sons had horrible experience, so I tend to be kind of sour on the subject of schools. I am very glad that you guys found a fabulous school! Really I am. (And it does sound perfect for your family, from what I've heard.)

Six hours with no peeing or lunch? It is crazy to treat little kids that way. Dang.
